En el año 1943 se creó lo que se conocería como la “cruz de la victoria” para animales, la medalla Dickin. Este galardón servía para premiar el importante y enorme esfuerzo que los animales hacían en la guerra. Aunque ellos no entendían de política, buenos o malos, se esforzaban por ayudarnos con todo su cariño y fidelidad. Los perros se utilizaban para localizar supervivientes, las palomas para mandar mensajes y todos ellos subían la moral de un pueblo atemorizado. De hecho entre 1943 y 1949 se condecieron 54 medallas Dickin; 32 para las palomas, 18 para perros, 3 a caballos y 1 para un gato.
¿Un gato? Os estaréis preguntando. Pues sí. Simon era un felino blanco y negro, pequeñito, que viajaba a bordo de la fragata real inglesa Amethyst por el río Yangtze, en China. El barco fue sitiado y atacado por los comunistas chinos durante varios días y parte de la tripulación murió. El pequeño Simon huyó aterrorizado hacia las profundidades de la fragata, pero el hambre le hizo regresar a la cubierta 5 días después.
Estaba herido, con cuatro heridas de metralla, quemaduras y una gran conmoción. Lo vendaron y curaron, pero él continuó cazando las ratas del barco mientras se recuperaba. También patrullaba entre sus compañeros enfermos, que le veían pasar con su pequeña cabeza vendada. Los supervivientes se sintieron reconfortados por el pequeño gato y tuvieron fuerzas para seguir adelante, imitándole.
A toda la tripulación le concedieron la medalla general naval británica por los servicios prestados. Galardón en el que se incluyó también al gato en un acto totalmente inusual. También lo nominaron para la medalla Dickin por su apoyo moral. Su recomendación decía así: “Simon, que sirvió en el Amethyst durante el incidente Yantze, acabó con muchas ratas a pesar de haber sido herido. Su comportamiento fue del más alto nivel a pesar de la fuerza del ataque. Simon continuó acabando con las ratas a razón de una por día (acababan con las provisiones del barco)”.
Simon, que vivió toda su vida en el mar, murió cuatro días antes de recibir su medalla. Fue enterrado en el cementerio de animales de la P.D.S.A en Inglaterra.
